Virginia Beach is the easternmost and one of the few of the so-called independent city in the USA located in the metropolitan area of Hampton Roads, Commonwealth of Virginia, at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay on the Atlantic Ocean. Virginia Beach is the most populous city in the state of Virginia, as well as the 39th largest city in the United States with a population of around 447,489 according to the 2012 census. The Hampton Roads area which is also called the “America’s First Region” includes other independent cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk and other smaller cities, counties and towns of Hampton Roads.

2. Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center

Getting There:

Virginia Beach is served by the nearby Norfolk International Airport (ORF), located about 20 miles to the west.  About a dozen national and regional airlines offer service here, as do the major national rental car companies.  Carey Transportation, with a stop located outside the terminal’s baggage claim area, offers shuttle service between the airport and Virginia Beach hotels.  Taxis are also readily available at the terminal.  Some offer a flat rate while others run on the meter.  Rates are set by the cities, so rates will vary.
             Another option is Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF), which might be a good choice for those straddling vacation times between Virginia Beach and Williamsburg.  Rental car companies are located in the main terminal, adjacent to baggage claim.  Drive time to the oceanfront is about 45-minutes.
